The Time The Sky FellA Poem by Riley BrayPlease read this, it would mean a lot to me.Dear daddy, Plummeting down here towards us As I giggled at your jokes and teased you about your prickly beard And those furry "gorilla arms." We were sitting tucked under a scratchy blanket, You in your lumberjack clothes And me in my american girl pajama's, As we sat on the swinging bench in the cooling night air and gazed at the stars. We watched as the butterflies and hummingbirds dozed off, And for a short moment there was complete silence, Which you were compelled to point out to me, And then came the crickets. And I sang to you proudly, showing off my voice As you smiled and hummed tunelessly along with me. And as my eyelids began to droop, You held me close and recited your own poetry with me named "peanut" or "kurmedgeon." And then, with a sharp intake of breath, You shook me just a bit and pointed out the falling star. I realize it was probably a satellite now, But I still think my wish will come true, so I can't say. And though you've chosen not to speak with me for a while now, I love you, and I will always love you, And maybe, if you don't remember that night, I'm glad I can still share and recall the time the sky fell.
