The Time The Sky Fell

The Time The Sky Fell

A Poem by Riley Bray
"

Please read this, it would mean a lot to me.

"
Dear daddy,

Do you remember the night the sky fell?
Plummeting down here towards us
As I giggled at your jokes and teased you about your prickly beard
And those furry "gorilla arms."

We were sitting tucked under a scratchy blanket,
You in your lumberjack clothes
And me in my american girl pajama's,
As we sat on the swinging bench in the cooling night air and gazed at the stars.

We watched as the butterflies and hummingbirds dozed off,
And for a short moment there was complete silence,
Which you were compelled to point out to me,
And then came the crickets.

And I sang to you proudly, showing off my voice
As you smiled and hummed tunelessly along with me.
And as my eyelids began to droop,
You held me close and recited your own poetry with me named "peanut" or "kurmedgeon."

And then, with a sharp intake of breath,
You shook me just a bit and pointed out the falling star.
I realize it was probably a satellite now,
But I still think my wish will come true, so I can't say.

And though you've chosen not to speak with me for a while now,
I love you, and I will always love you,
And maybe, if you don't remember that night,
I'm glad I can still share and recall the time the sky fell.

Let me just say that I know that the kurmudgeon is not a word, but if you look you'll notice its in quotes, because that's what he referred to me as. No, I don't know what a kurmudgeon is. :P

This is a legitimate story about my dad and I. :)

Letters to an old relationship, just lovely. Gloomy emotions seem to linger despite the happy thoughts, but more of a haunting feeling by the reader, as we were the fathers laying watchful eyes on the letter. Well done!

Thanks! I didn't realize it was haunting but now that I think about it that actually makes sense. :)
curmudgeon is an awkward word. it usually refers to a cantankerous old fool, or a useless hobo, or a mangy dog....it is not a pet name by any means. i have heard it used many times as a slur....this poem is awesome, treasured moments with dad, which are long gone for whatever unexplained reasons. i liked it very much.

This is truly beautiful. It honestly makes me kind of relate to my relationship with my dad, we're really have a close bond. And he's much older than my friend's parents are, so I worry a lot about the time limit I have with him and cherish the moments I have with him, or try to. It's very nostalgic, but very warm, too. I hope all works out with your father, it's a very important relationship to hold.

Yours truly, Delaney
