Clear as crystal

Clear as crystal

A Poem by jdcdickenson

The air is so still

I can hear everything now

Every chirp of every little bird

The rustle of leaves in the trees

Far off I hear a siren and I’m reminded what’s just beyond the tree line

So thick and so still

Almost like I could pass right through it

But I know I can’t

I know the serenity is an illusion

It’s a quiet storm

Waiting for a fool

Wanting for someone to blindly leap in

Ready to suffocate

But each breath is deeper

The air is so clean today

So clean and so still

So unmoving and so turbulent

Tension stirs in the air and I choke, not knowing what to do

I take a long drag on my cigarette and suffocate

I can breathe again

I can’t hear the birds anymore

But I can still hear the siren, just past the trees

Over where the air is so heavy the birds can’t even fly

Everyone’s there but me

Because over here the air is so crisp

So still and so crisp that it can make you can weak

It can make you humble

It can make you feel alive

A slight breeze touches my face and I close my eyes

I don’t know if the siren is still wailing

I can’t hear anything but the flow of the wind

The air is so strong today

So strong that it could break me

So strong that it can make you whole

The breeze blows away and I hear a single bird chirping

I watch him take flight

He slices through the emptiness, climbing and climbing

I watch him until he meets the horizon

I think I watch him go even farther

And maybe I do

Because the view is so clear today

The air is just so still

That maybe I could see for miles
