The Day the Dream Died

The Day the Dream Died

A Poem by Jayden Ireton

Today the dream died

Our King is dead

No one is left to lead us to the promise land

Damn the Whites who took our King

Damn them all, the vile beings

Leave us be alive and free

Take our seats, take our King, take our children, everything

Tonight we will lay in bed and cry

Tomorrow is a new day again we try

They beat us back again and again

Hold strong with the faith of our Lord in hand

Today is a day we will never forget

Today is the day they took God’s gift.

The only thing that stands out to me, is "promise land". Given the surrounding text, I personally would have capitalised it. Otherwise, another powerful poem. Nice job.

Beautiful and full of passion. Excellent poem. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of my heroes. :)

Strong words and images here. I like the feel of the wording and phrasing, as it has power and I can imagine it being read aloud. Very stark and honest.

A few little things...

No one is left to lead us to the promise(d) land

Damn the Whites who took our King (should "whites" be capitalized?)

Thank you for the read. Yes I chose to capitalize Whites. I am unorthodox at times.

I get it...if you're personifying the race as one "whole". Makes sense.
In all life there is loss, it is inevitable. So many important people die, but then again, so many insignificant (importnat to only a few) people die as well. But...as long as their memories remain, none have not died at all. very cool.

Thank you for the read. Yes the memories keep them alive.
more than one dream died that year...we lost bobby too...i was going to vote for him...was 18 and it would have been my first time voting..then after that we were left with lousy choices...so waited till 4 years later to vote..or even later , don't remember...
just remember all the heartbreak that year...my freshman year at SIU...

this poem keeps bringing me back.

Yes that was a horrible time for leaders. I am glad that the poem can take you back even if it is a .. read more
execeptional piece about such a tragic event...this is not masked by really fancy words just a more direct shot in the head...

and it works...but yes, have faith because what goes around comes around ...and it will.

A great poem about Dr. King. The rhyme was great, a very moving piece you capture the hatred and sorrow very nicely. My only note would be the lack of punctuation. Which is fine but remember the reader doesn't stop until we see a mark to do so, so read it out loud and mark where you want the pause :) Great Job
