Life's LessonsA Story by Jessica DallaireWritten for my WR121 class. Yay homework. Iono, I didn't think it was bad, thought I'd share. ^^
Life twists us in all kinds of directions and from every situation, we learn more and more about ourselves, the world around us, and life in general. Sometimes we don't even realize how much our outlook on life is changed until we reflect back on who we once were and what we once believed.
The assignment was, compose a five hundred word paper on what we've learned about life in the last two years. When I sat down to write this, I had no idea it would be as difficult as it is turning out to be. I've learned so much about so many things, but to put it into words seems like a huge challenge. I guess that is a place to start, though: challenges. We all face them. In the last two years I have come to the realization that nothing is out to get me, but I've been faced with challenges so that I can grow as a human being. Every challenge has it's lessons and we only get out of every situation what we choose to take. Life is about growing.
Love, being one of the biggest challenges, has changed me most. In the last two years, I have been in lust, been in like, been in love, been through loss, been through rebound, been used, been hurt, healed and now am in love again. Whether we're trying to acquire it, trying to keep it, or trying to lose it, I am betting that most can agree that love changes us all. In learning about love, I've learned so much about life. I've learned that love is the driving force behind most things. I've also learned that even when hearts get broken, they always have the ability to mend and that when one refuses to let go of their past, they have trouble moving toward the future.
I've also learned that loss, however unfortunate, is a necessary part of life. In learning this, I've also learned that everything happens for a reason. When I lost one of the most important people to me, at the time I thought I couldn't go on. He taught me what love really was and showed me how to love someone unconditionally. I now see that I was meant to lose him. He taught me what he was meant to teach me, and for that he will always be a part of me, but I don't regret and wouldn't change that fact that I lost him. In teaching me what he did, he gave me the ability to love another person fully and to never take anyone for granted, because I never can be sure of when I won't have them in my life.
Life is about being thankful for all of the situations and challenges put before us. It's about knowing that everything has a reason for being. It's about knowing that you only receive what you're willing to take from it. Life is meant to be hard. It's a blessing if one looks at it as such.
