The Past Repeats Itself

The Past Repeats Itself

A Poem by J.N. Danescu
"

Experimental poem written to explore modern day society and its impact on minority groups of various identities

"

They all say that the past repeats itself as time moves on its way,

That we can’t help but be intolerable, narrow minded, and unwilling to sway.

The same struggles every day as a result of nothing but a clouded mind.

Even a single person can make a difference in a world where our identities are assigned.

The thought of a future where we define ourselves and maintain individuality

Is a safe haven compared to our current state of brutality.

Society is at a loss for words as people of different races, gender, and sexuality stand proud,

Looking for any way to live their lives unbowed by the mess we have created for ourselves.

Humbled and depressed by the chains of the so called majority,

By government, organizations, and people who say they stand for nothing but equality

But if the past repeats itself then what hope is there for those of us opposed by social conduct

To lie in wait, and rot in the dungeons of our identities all while being obstructed

From the freedom and liberties we truly seek.

Where is our justice.

Poison runs thick through our veins, scum lines our teeth and lungs

Or so they say, merely advocating for us to be hung

By the ropes we are forced to turn with our own hands

As the brand of our identity is seared into our flesh, meanwhile

Becoming what we are defined as by societies clenched jaws and malicious smile.

The future is an infinite combination of “what ifs” and “maybe somedays”

What if this goes horribly wrong, or maybe it’ll go right?

Time and space is infinite according to the majority of theoreticians,

If that’s the case then why haven’t we already found a way to form a coalition.

Diversity is key in forming a world worth living in,

Where the people can express themselves without feeling the need to try and fit in.

Conformity with the social norms and binary are the bane of so many communities

It’s about time we repeat the past and act out a coup d’etat or a mutiny.

The misfits and vagabonds of society are the Anne Bonny’s and William Kidd’s of our time.

Pirates of the breaking waves of humanity’s infrastructure,

Slicing through the murky waters of right and wrong, the goods and evils of the mind,

An enzyme of morality acting as a catalyst for change and amplifying  society's reactions.

Numerous symbols have been used to identify the outcasts of the population,

Look to Hitler’s regime with the pink triangles and stars of David,

A man despised by humanity yet we passively use his methods to isolate those with differences.

Those things you may see as flaws or abominations are only reflections of your feelings of indifference

For there is nothing ugly about anyone as long as they are strive to do good,

Yes everyone has opinions but often times they’re drastically misunderstood.

They all say that the past repeats itself as time moves on its way,

And the time for revolution has long been coming and we’re finally making headway.

At times the fear of persecution is too much to bear,

So now we must stand up for those who cannot gather the courage to face this nightmare.

Now put aside all feelings of unnerve,

To protest the system for the justice that is deserved.

And so the past repeats itself in a vicious and unending cycle…
