I Want to Know

I Want to Know

A Poem by Jennifer Lenhardt

Sweet Love
How you elude me
I have looked for you always
Yet, you are unattainable, and I am left wanting
Yearning, I am empty
Searching endlessly
But you are an apparition, an illusion
If you should ever find me and I am kissed by your favor
Would I be seduced by the very thing I have longed for?
My disillusionment?
Would I forsake all for just one loving taste?
In my eye - Love - sweet and tender
You are as the tempting apple
Making false promises you would not keep
If I should ever wander through your garden
Might I be captivated by you?
True Love?
Would you entice to entertain me?
And if I should fall into your trap,
You would tire of me and find another
I am certain
Yet, still I am intrigued by you
I desire the one thing I have never had
Blissful Love
To be swept away in a tidal wave of emotion
Though fleeting, still I want you
Envy grips me when I see you entertaining others
Like the new love between star-crossed lovers
Their eyes meant for no one else
Or even love refined
As I catch your twinkle still in the eyes of a seasoned couple
These all arouse my jealousy
For you - Sweet Love - have visited others
Yet continually pass over me
Why is this?
I want to know
