ABOUT THE BULL

big white face bull
a state fair grand champion
so full of himself,
certain he was the big man on our ranch,
so ornery i had to saddle my horse
and ride out to bring in the milk cows,
he belonged to johnny acosta but we kept him
for the cost of covering the cows,
how he made a hell of my chores
until i caught my brother laughing
when i was struggling to stay safe and still
get the feed in the hay racks...

“ok, smart a*s, you do it”

and he did, no problem, no horse

“How in the hell”...

and chuck explained,
when johnny delivered the b*****d
he came afer me in the chute
i grabbed the nearest weapon to hand,
a chunk of 2x4,
and polaxed him,
oh god, was i scared,
all 2000 pounds of prize bull
toppled over like a well shot deer...
you know that spot on the crown of a mustang’s head
right behind the ears
where mustangers used to crease the wild ones
to knock them out
cattle have the same soft spot
i thought i killed him
but after a few minutes
the s.o.b got up kinda weak in the knees
and he’s given me a wide berth ever since

so the next morning 2x4 in hand
i went out to get the cows on foot,
no problem, no bull...

sometimes you have to smack your way past the bullshit...

you showed him, jeannemarie...

love your stories....ever since my youth in Vermont...i have loved cows...and we always gave those bulls a wide berth...nice to see the reverse happen.
