MERRY BOY N SLEWFOOT SUEA Poem by jeannemarie coultermerry boy and slewfoot sue, my delightful introduction to tennessee walking horses... merry boy was bright bay 16.2 hands tall, he walked 8 to 10 miles an hour, and never seemed to tire, was my mount to follow the wandering stream through the sunflower fields to the consumnes river i could stand on his back and almost, almost touch the bats sleeping on hot lazy summer days under the ancient stone bridge over the quiet water pond... i would slip from his bare back into cool water silk to drift leaflike on water face and play while he stood belly deep snoozing the day away.... i rode slewfoot sue at her owner’s request because she was out of shape, she was a barren liver chestnut mare, so dark she was almost black and smaller than merry boy, but faster and her back was 8 inches wide sitting up there was like sitting in a rocking chair that traveled 12 miles in an hour... constant companions we explored every leaf lace hidden canyon and coulee along the river every day for the whole of my 16th summer, imagining i was sakajaweja leading lewis and clark into history, funny, she had a foal every year after that... some of the best i have ever seen, perhaps barrenness is a state of mind based on love and caring... slewfoot sue and 1st foal © 2015 jeannemarie coulterFeatured Review
