SAND AND GREASEWOOD MORNING

SAND AND GREASEWOOD MORNING

A Poem by jeannemarie coulter
"

morning ride in high plains desert...

"

SAND AND GREASEWOOD MORNING

in pale amber dawn
i wander through high desert
mounted on my zebra dun,
salvaje,
singlefooting over sand
sented of greasewood in spring
spiced with cactus rose blooms
we share the peace of desert
morn coming alive
with the song of coyotes
late home to their den...

turning to peach gold
the luminescent sun stirs
the birds into morning song
causing cactus flowers
to yawn open awake, refilling
the air with succulent scents...coming out of a coulee,
salvaje snorts and whickers softly
his wild kin look up, startled
awake
the scarred stallion whistles
a challenge/warning,
but the lead mare knows better
she laughsnorts at us
and whirling they leap away free
and we watch frozen, transfixed
as they disappear majestically
into the coming gold of day...

humbled,
and
a bit sad
we return home to begin our workday.

jeannemarie, your writing is beautiful but I find it difficult to relate, never having experienced desert life nor riding a horse. I suppose that I could try looking at it metaphorically but I have difficulty making that connection as well. I can only compliment your writing style, you are very gifted in that regard. take care...dan

I agree. Free animals allow us to know. Somethings need to be free.
a moment of freedom captured beautifully before the realities of the day move in to focus... love the description in this...

Riding a horse on the morning desert--what better way is there to begin the day?

that part of the day that is just ours...no one owns us, we are free to roam and feel the surroundings.

you paint quite a picture here with this....beautifully scenic poem.
