A QUESTION TO PONDER

A QUESTION TO PONDER

a question from my life

A QUESTION TO PONDER

when the sneakysnaking fingers
slickyslipped under the panties
of the little girl not quite 3
did that end her virginity
or was it lost
the first time
something too big
was shoved at/into
a place too small,
or did it die in painless throes
when a spectacular fall
with a half-broke horse
shattered her hymen

did innocence die
in that single instant
or does it
hang around until
the mind matures
standing unharmed
unbroken without shame
gloriously guiltless
until she
accidently on their purpose
overhears a nasty finger pointing gossip,
a narrow minded neighbor
calling her a s**t,
saying she is no better
than could be expected
with that dirty old drunk
for a grandfather

or did innocence
and virginity
pass away delightfully during the
wondrous embryonic
journey in the marriage bed
with her beloved husband
who slowly with infinite patience
caressed the shame and guilt into
explosions of ecstasy
and eternal cycles of joy

when, exactly
was innocense lost???
and what, exactly
was the cost...

A deep question to ponder. I would like to hope that virginity was relinquished in the latter imagery, rather than the former, and perhaps some facet of innocence was retained.

I am interested in your thoughts, dear poet, and the inspiration for this poem.
