san francisco bay

A Poem by john holt

when darkness descends
on the sea, it has
the quality of blue shade
through dahlias, where
the cliffs are high, and
the edge is uncertain

and the sea was green
and we laughed long
though the wind was
cold mid-summer and
the gale was strong

blindly, we strolled
past the eucalyptus groves
and onto dusty boulders
to stand at the 1,000-ft drop,
and we imagined the waters
as black ink come nightfall,
so far below us
