Barcelona

Barcelona

A Poem by Jess Rose

Air rushed to my lungs

As I woke

In Barcelona

6 hours on one of the fastest trains in Europe

To a new city

A new country

New sky, ground, language, people

New air in my lungs

A smile spread on my face

As I walked

In Barcelona

Dogs everywhere

Cold wind on my skin on the sandy beach

A gay pride flag smiling at me coyly

A girl with blue hair and scars sat beside me

Beautiful women all around

“Girls just wanna have fundamental rights”

My spirit soared

I could feel

The heartbeat of the city

Walking down its streets

Thousands upon thousands of people

Buildings both modern and classic

In one design

A tear rolled down my cheek

As I lay

In Barcelona

As my world fell apart

For the 4th time this week

“I don’t really want to be alive right now”

But a comforting hand

And loving soul

Bring me back to Earth

To block that number

Pain jumps in my heart

As I sit

In Barcelona

Reading that a blocked number

Tried to call

Panic

Pain as I try to calm

But a compassionate voice

And a kind embrace

Bring me back

To Barcelona

The heartbeat

Of the City

Wind on my skin

My soul soars

A tear rolls down my cheek

As I think

Of Barcelona

Sitting in my little room

In USA, Nebraska

I miss the heartbeat

Of my city

It’s not really mine

But it is
