Two dates and a wedding

Two dates and a wedding

A Chapter by Maura Ansley

Dani

Oh, my god. This could not be happening. I had not kissed my best friend. We had definitely not told his brother and my entire family. I would wake up in my bed soon, because this was too good to be true. It was just a dream. That’s how over the moon I was right then. I couldn’t wipe the silly grin off of my face. Dylan sat down beside me on the couch.

“There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you.” He said.

“What?”
“I . . . asked Alyssa Barnes on a date!” He says.

“No way! You’ve had a crush on her since sixth grade. She stole your heart and all your pencils.” I laughed.

“Don’t say it like that! It sounds like some stupid valentines day card.” He said. I grinned.

“So, when are you two going out?”

“We’re going to the dance this friday.”
“Huh, I didn’t even think to ask Sam to that.” I mused. “Hold on.” I called his number, number two on my speed dial. Dylan was 1.

“Hey, Sam. Listen, I was wondering. Do you want to go to the dance together this friday?”

“Oh, yeah! I completely forgot about that.” He said. “Sure. Pick you up at seven?”

“Okay, bye Sam!” I said.

“Bye.” I hung up.

“There!” I said. Dylan grinned.

It was the night of the dance. Cally was helping me get ready. We went through the same process as last time, but I didn’t mind it as much this time for some reason. Anyway, this time she dressed me a little more simply, in a light blue sundress, which still had a pretty low neckline, with a skirt that went a little farther than my knees. She blow dried and flatironed my hair until it was stick straight and so smooth I couldn’t help but touch it.

“Stop that!” Cally said. “You’ll mess it up!” She also did my makeup simply, just a little mascara, blush, and a little bit of lip gloss. I had to admit, I looked pretty good. She gave me simple black flats for the shoes. Finally, shoes without a heel! I could actually walk down the stairs. I wanted to laugh at the expression of shock on Sam’s face, but I was too busy being shocked by him. He was wearing yet another tux. His sandy hair was somewhat windblown. His green eyes seemed to mesmerise me as I walked down the stairs.

“Hi.” I said, feeling rather anticlimactic. He grinned at me.

“Hi.” And we walked out the door, arm in arm, to where Paul was waiting to take us to the dance.

Dylan

When I got to Alyssa’s house, it was ten minutes to seven. Her dad ushered me in. Oh, no. This wasn’t going to be one of those stereotypical situations where he gives me the whole ‘Take care of her or else’ speech, right?. Thankfully, it wasn’t. Her dad was really cool, and we were still laughing when she came downstairs. She was wearing a floaty, pink dress, and her blonde hair was piled on top of her head. She looked so amazing I was tempted to pinch myself, to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Finally, we got to the dance. They were playing a slow song.

“Shall we?” I asked Alyssa. She laughed.

“Of course!” We twirled, and danced, and spun until we were both dizzy.

“So, Dylan,” She asked me after we had gotten some punch, “What’s up with Sam and Dani? And why didn’t you move? Not that I’m not happy, I’m just curious.” She said. I smiled.

"Well, mom says the mortgage fell through. I think she just couldn't part with the house. As for Sam and Dani, when Dani and I found out that we weren't moving, she was about to text him to come over. She didn't want to tell him in a text. But he had already texted her, basically telling her that he had loved her since the day they met. But he couldn't find the courage to tell her."

"Awww. Well, I bet if you liked someone, you would let them know." I smiled at her.

"Absolutely." And that's when I kissed her. And no, I'm not going to describe it. I hate it when books do that! Let's just say, it was amazing.

Eventually, it was the last song of the night. It was a slow song. I could see Dani and Sam dancing as Alyssa and I spun around. She rested her head on my chest.

“You know, I wish this night would never end.” She said.

“Me, too.” I told her. But sadly, the song ended. I dropped her off at her doorstep.

“Goodbye, Dylan. We’ll have to keep in touch over the summer.” She said. She went inside her house, and I went back to the car. When I got home, Dani was already in our room, in her pajamas. She was spinning around in circles.

“Dani?” I asked. She turned back and grinned at me. “Hi, Dylan.” I sat down on my bed.

She skipped over, and sat down next to me.

“Did you kiss her?” She asked.

“Yeah, I did.” She squealed.

“Yay! Oooh, can I plan your wedding? Obviously in a couple of years, but once it’s time . . . Oooh, I wonder what your kids will look like!”
“Dani, Alyssa and I just had our first date. What has gotten into you tonight?” She laughed.

“I don’t know! I just know that I’m insanely, incredibly, wonderfully happy!” She sang. I laughed at her.

“Dani, are you on a sugar high?” I asked. She shook her head.

“Nope! Sam knows me too well. He wouldn’t let me have any sugar.” She said.

“Alright. Well, don’t forget, you’re going with Ash to look at wedding dresses tomorrow.”

                Dani

Ash walked out of the fitting room. She was in a sleeveless, ivory dress. It had a fitted bodice. and a full skirt. It had a lace up back, which Mom, Cally, and I helped her with.  There were seed pearls along the hem and the neckline. It was gorgeous. Ash looked at herself in the mirror.

“This is the one.” She said.

“Oh, yeah.” I said.

“Definitely.” agreed Cally. Mom burst into tears.

“I can’t believe one of my babies is moving out and getting married!” She hugged Ash, and we all crowded in for a massive group hug.

“Has anybody seen my bouquet?” I yelled. All the bridesmaids, the matron of honor (Mom) and the bride herself were in one room. There was a chorus of no’s. Cally, who was in the small bathroom adjoining to this room, doing makeup, called “It’s in here!”

“Thanks, Cally.” I walked through the room and into this bathroom, to grab my bouquet. All of us bridesmaids were wearing matching, light blue, sleeveless dresses. I helped Cally arrange her veil.

“Okay, perfect. Now come on! We have to make it to the church!” I said. Together, we all pulled into the limo. We all walked into the church. Bridesmaids first, of course. Then, finally, the organ changed it’s tune. Everyone stood up, and Ash walked through the door. Thomas was giving her away. He was nervous, and sad. You could really tell. She looked so happy. It was a long ceremony. They recited the traditional vows. Finally, the minister said.

“You may kiss the bride.” And they were married. We all walked out, arm in arm. I was with Dylan, who was also in the ceremony.

“Is Sam still coming to the reception?” I asked him.

“Yep.”  We all crowded into the limos, and went to the reception hall. We found Sam quickly enough. He followed Dylan and I to the car Ash and Connor would be taking to the airport.

“Did you bring the shoes?” I asked him. He pulled them out of the bag he had brought. I slipped my awful high heels off my feet and tied them to the back of the car along with the ones Sam had brought. Then Sam took out some cans and tied them to the bumper. I took my paint pen, and drew hearts on the side windows. Then Sam took it out of my hand.

“Sam! Hey!” I chased him around the car until we were both breathing heavily, unable to take another step. That’s when Dylan took it out of Sams hand.

“Hey!” I gasped. But I was breathing too hard to do anything. He wrote the words ‘ Together Forever’ on one of the side windows. Then he gave the pen back to me, and I wrote “Just Married!” on the back window. We all high fived, and went back in to join the reception. Sam took my hand.

“Come on, let’s dance!” It was a perfect, golden afternoon, and I knew the glow would last a lifetime . . .
