nickel and dimed to death

nickel and dimed to death

A Poem by Jay Bailey
"

burned out shell of a working man

"
Nickel and dimed to death
Alienated by everyone
Found rotting, alone in his one bedroom apartment
Dead for days but no one came looking
No next of kin will buy a box to put him in
An entire life of making ends meet
A stomach full of knots
A conscience full of guilt
Teeth clenched till the bitter end
It takes a long time to die
Failed by government
No family or friends
All the things you do in life
Completely shunned
Died among his books and papers
A slow, steady decline
Till the body gives away
Never felt anything worth living for
He just wants death
So give him death
A permanent end to a lifetime of problems
It was never going to get any better
Been dead long before the body was broken
The shadow of the axe hangs over everyone's head
I have never been afraid
I welcome it
It's a lie
There's no life here
It's only treading water
Bring death, I am yours

I really enjoy this. I especially like the lines:
"Teeth clenched till the bitter end"
"It takes a long time to die"
"A slow, steady decline"
Till the body gives away"
"Been dead long before the body was broken"
and "It's only treading water"

Basically I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.
