Once Upon a TimeA Poem by Jaya MillerOnce upon a time, I saw Cinderalla dance with a prince, Aurora wakened with a kiss And Rapunzel rescued from a tower. And it was lovely. As I grew older, nothing much changed But I lamented how little I’d known about them, And how much more I wanted to know. I knew they could sing and fall in love, But what else could they do? And I never found an answer. As I grew older still, I wondered why they sang And why they fell in love. But I couldn’t find a reason. They were beautiful, I thought as I watched, Maybe that’s why they fell in love. I watched again and again, And I saw that they were stuck. They needed princes or fairy godmothers, And I wondered why I didn’t have those things. I watched again, fully grown, And saw that I never had a prince And I was sad. I never had a fairy godmother, And I was sad. But watching again this time, I stopped. I had found my fairy godmother and my prince. The one who saved and helped me, It was so clear. I got up and looked in the mirror and laughed. How could I have been so blind? My rescuer and my helper had been there all along, Glittering in my eyes. Once upon a time, I saw Cinderalla dance with a prince, Aurora wakened with a kiss And Rapunzel rescued from a tower. And it was heartbreaking. They could never be anything more than a princess. © 2014 Jaya MillerReviews
