The News at Ten

Another press conference for another fatal stabbing of one of Britain's youth...

 

Another Mother weeps in public,

Father sits tight lipped in rage,

Sister's head on Father's shoulder,

Brother lying in his grave.

 

Father calls for killers justice,

Mother sobs some words of love,

Sister tries to comfort Mother

Please God, don’t we kill enough?

 

Policeman calls for witness statements,

“You are protected by the law”,

Grandad shakes in desperation,

Its not the country he fought for.

 

Newsmen ask the same old questions,

MPs talk the same old talk,

Community leaders call for peace,

On streets where only gangsters walk.

 

So Family sit behind the desk,

Recounting moments of his life,

Another victim, death, statistic,

Another victim of a knife.

I think this poem captures the indeifference with which most of us view incidents like this in a whole new light. It's easy to forget that this sort of thing happens as nothing that you see on the television ever really seems real but you have captured the whoe scenario very effecively. The repeated use of the word another just makes the fact that this is all to common hit home even harder.
