Lithium Carbonate, I Long to Berate

Lithium Carbonate, I Long to Berate

A Poem by Kenneth Stephen Goodpaster

Little white chalky pill sitting on my palm,
Four hundred fifty taken twice a day,
As so that my cyclic moods can becalm.
Psht,  my ingenious mind need not allay!
Hinderer of fervent energy,
I wish to permanently dispel you;
Thief of infinite creativity,
With your absence I certainly make do.
As your stable restraints unfix
The naturally occurring mood seasons,
Supplementing the psychiatric tricks
That accuses my mind of unsound reasons.
To delay no longer, I quick ingest
Ending urges that intensely molest.

Author's Note

Kenneth Stephen Goodpaster
I take my prescribed medications daily and adamantly. I must profess great emphasis on the importance on taking medications, especially when dealing with a mood or psychotic disorder. I am just merely expressing the feelings I sometimes get with my medications, which can be normal.

The couplet that concludes the poem is intended to be abrupt as if to end the train of thought persuading against disposing of the pill. I must suddenly pop and swallow my pills from time to time to make sure I take it.
