Poetic Death

Poetic Death

A Poem by JC

Afghanistan
Should have given me
Many things to write about.
Instead, now everything seems
So trivial comparatively.
I long for those naive days
Of a naive boy who looked
At everything in the world with
Wondrous intrigue..
A dark cold envelopes me,
Sympathy becomes suspicion....
Frozen in existential pain
I long to know nothing again.
I don't even know the purpose
Of these pointless words....

Hi JC,
First poem I have read of yours... at least I think so.
This is such a sad poem..but what I get from it are your last two line... your question..." I don't even know the purpose
Of these pointless words...."
That says it all because you are trying to say what you feel and I think that is good...
Those thoughts actually make for a good poem.
The loss of your youth ...well, it is gone... so you need to go forward now... writing what you feel is a great way to release all that sadness...
I wrote a poem which I think you might relate to called... Innocence...

I hear ya JC. My brother did multiple tours and we're thankful he's retired. Your words hit home brother. You can feel it.
"A dark cold envelopes me". I like that line. Nice work.

It was the longest war in the military history of the United States, surpassing the length of the Vietnam War by approximately six months. Everything does seem trivial comparatively, but this poem certainly ignites the enormity of it in the heart of this poet.

"Frozen in existential pain..." There's the purpose of these words!

After Afghanistan, nothing will ever be the same. This poem fills me with sadness. How do you get over that horror of horrors?

That sense of wonder needs to remain and not be confused with the fading and dying away of naiveté. The trick, perhaps is in finding our personal wonder and how to feed it, care for it. This is a very drawing poem. Drawing the reader out into the reality that imposes itself on our naive thoughts and ways. Thanks for sharing.
