Not of the Damned

Not of the Damned

A Poem by JC

In a worldly sense, us westerners are like royalty
living in a kingly bubble,
we criticize and make assumptions
on how things should be done
with utopian eyes and
scenes of moral glory
and smiling faces....

we fail to realize
that life is dirty
complicated
and corrupt....

you visited a third world country and
now you think you know the reality...
but just because you ventured out
and spent some time
on the streets of the damned
doesn't make you damned as well...

I really like pieces of realization like this. Of course everyone in a first world country is aware of the issues in the third world, but it doesn't become real until you see and experience it for yourself. It's easy to fall asleep in your comfy bed and warm house to forget about the rest of the world.
A great message :)

Oh how refreshing to see such an intelligent and realistic world view, in poetry.
We poets tend to get a little carried away in over-felt emotions and romanticized
tragedies, but this is raw truth.
I respect that a great deal.
Great work.

This is so true, many people believe that what happens in other places doesn't matter as long as they are doing fine, they fail to realize that it does because if we were put in there shoes our mind set would change completely. The way people live in third world country should be the concern of everyone, very well put Jason.!

I never thought of it in that light, but it makes sense. You've steered my thought, thanks Lizzie.

Corruption is everywhere, even in the places people like to call "clean and strong." Thank you for sharing. Great work.

Ahh we like to think our country is perfect but in reality we hide our eyes from the issues we have right at home and point fingers in other directions. Like this poem that makes e s you think.

I love the gritty truth inherent in this poem. Hey people, are you ready for the truth.... hmmm.... yeah I liked this.

Wow this was pretty good, you put out the idea very clearly...but still intriguing. I agree too!

Nicely done poem. Too bad other governments around the world won't treat their people better, taking all for themselves instead of sharing with their people. If they weren't tyrants and dictators then there wouldn't be 3rd world countries. Freedom would go a long way to ending such despair. Freedom is what most people want. It all depends on the leaders of these countries what their countries are like.
