It is important to always persevere, do your best, and adapt to change.Jason Bempah Dialogue assignment When in middle school I was pretty smart and my report cards consisted of all A’s up to the 5th grade. Towards the end of my fourth grade year my grade school cleaned house and hired new teachers for the older grades to challenge the students more. During the 1st semester of my 5th grade year I cruised through, and then report card time came. I earned all A’s across the board, then a C+ in math. After school I hopped on the H route septa bus and after getting off I walked around the corner to my house, wondering what my parents would say. Knowing that report cards came out I knew by the time I came home my mother would be ready to know what my report card looked like. As I got home my mother was patiently waiting in the living room, and when I walked in, she greeted me, but as any other parent would, had intentions to ask about my report card. After both of our days were discussed my mother asked, “How was your report card?” Nervously I responded, “I did okay. I have all A’s and a C+ in math.” “Not too bad, but what’s up with the C?” My mother asked curiously. “We have a different math teacher from last year, and it got a lot harder.” Then, as most mothers do, she began to question me. “Did you do your personal best”? My mother asked “I’m not sure. I worked as hard as I did this year last year, I guess the teacher is more difficult and the material got harder”. “Well, how much time did you put into studying”? My mom asked becoming more concerned with my study habits. “I don’t really study on a regular, sometimes I open the book before a test or a quiz”, I answered indifferently. “Don’t worry about it, just keep working hard and maybe consider going to see a tutor,” “Okay thanks, I already spoke to my teacher about possibly getting tutoring.” I replied. “What did he say”? “Mondays through Wednesdays are usually good for him”, “Okay that’s good. Make sure you go see him and I’m sure you’ll be fine”. My mother said at the end of the conversation. Over the next two months, I stayed after school with my teacher from Mondays-Wednesday to work with getting comfortable with numbers, fractions, and decimals. I slowly began to improve and it reflected on my test scores. Instead of receiving 78’s and 79’s, I began to see grades such as 87’s and 88’s. This was encouraging seeing my hard work paying off. On a Friday afternoon after receiving my progress report, I greeted my mom at the door when she came home asking, “How was your day”? with a smile on my face. “Good how about you? And you seem pretty happy”, “I received my progress update and I improved in math”! “How did you do”!? She asked very curiously with excitement in her voice. “I did the usual in my other subjects but a B+ in math”! I exclaimed. “Congrats I’m so proud of you! Doesn’t it feel good to put in the work and see the results”? “Thanks! And yes it does”, I said satisfied because I saw I pleased my mother. “I knew you could do it all along. Sometimes in life you will have to adapt to change, and work harder then you did before. But nothing in life is impossible, some things you just will have to work harder for”. And that was truly the greatest lesson of them all.
