Outfit for Today

Outfit for Today

A Poem by Jasmine Smith
"

be yourself

"

A life spent wrapped in the comfort of other’s voices

But soon the blankets begin to smother you

Opening the eyes that they have shut

To find someone else in the mirror

Told that that is who you are

But isn’t that spot already taken?

Desiring for that reflection to become you

Rising out of the bed, struggling

To put on clothes others have picked out for you

You make it work

Putting away what you wanted to wear

Years of cutting yourself open and

Shoving inside the lies of truth

Stand tall as the mask covers up the tears

Screaming at yourself

But who is that?

The most beautiful you, which is the true you

Hidden from even your own eyes

Each day yearning for courage to show the world

You

Love is Love

Time to uncover the real truth

Speak without fear

You are strong

You are beautiful

You are loved

Be your true self

Pick out what you want to wear

Fantastic! I enjoyed the comparisons of "sociably acceptable" things thrown at us like articles of clothing that we wear, when all we want to be is our true "naked" selves. Keep it flowing!
