Migranes

Migranes

A Poem by Jane Mika
"

My thoughts on the head aches I've been feeling lately. Of course, they rhyme...

"
I toss and turn,
I'm not sure why,
There's a pain, knocking
Above and between my eyes.
I'll answer the door when I know how,
I'm still learning how to switch off the lights,
At night.

They're all concerned,
I should know why,
This pain could be a sign,
I'll open that door when I know how,
I'm still learning how to switch off the lights,
At night.

Growing pains, I hope,
Changing skies, I say,
No time to think about the grave,
What could be,
Brings anxiety.

Growing pains, I hope,
Changing skies, I say,
No time to think about what can't change today.

The signs are knocking on the door,
Above and between my eyes,
It's only a matter of time.
I'll open the door when I know how,
I'm still learning how to switch off the light,
At night.

This one seems to reflect an awareness of mortality. The opening of the door is probably a reference to coming to terms with death. Switching off the lights might be the ability to take the mind off of dying. The last verse is rather ominous, as if the possibility of illness is coming closer. A good look at how fear can get out of control.

i feel how stress can make us assume so many bad things and have physical effects from the mental...i am still trying to learn how to switch off the lights...to stop thinking, stressing worrying about what i can not change...sleep or lack of is showing in the eyes...
and then we start wondering if there is something physical going on and we are in grave danger...
those lights can be awful hard to turn off, we just can't find the switch that will stop our mind from taking on a life of its own.

This nicely flowing freeverse uses repitition as a device to give the reader the feel of a continued and on-going struggle the protagonist is having. One can interpret this in a literal sense in that they suffer from true migraine of unknown origin and ruminate about it, particularly at night when pain is amplified. On the other hand it may be allegorical in that the subject is struggling with the anxieties and growing pains of youth with all of its pressure. Reads well.
