A Poem by The Hampstead Poet

8:11 AM
The clocks stopped at that moment
At least, my kindred heart
Felt something
When yours stopped
and wouldn't start

For that's when every mortal thing
Felt the agony that came
With your exit from this fleeting world
Nothing would be the same

For something died within me
That was taken by your hand
That even the lifeline anchoring us
To this world couldn't withstand

And you left me in darkness
In which I could not think
Could not breathe without pain
Of your absence, of that link

How could you leave?
Abandon the promise that we'd both made
To comfort one another
When we both had reached old age

You shattered me, for shards
Of memory did pierce my lungs
And tears sprung all too ready to my eyes
For we were young

I saw you once, when you were gone
Clothed entirely in white
You looked so peaceful, how dare you
Give up our final fight?

For we shared your diagnosis
And we shared your pain and tears
I would have fought to save you
From the darkness, from your fears

But you are gone now, nothing more
Can be said without pain
And I must bear this cross alone
And happiness I'll feign

And I will fight, though you are gone
Bear your memory to them
For they must know the hole you left
At 8:11 AM
