Bitter SecondsA Poem by The Hampstead Poet
Burning through the darkness, rippling shadows in the air
That scorches deep, burns through my lungs ablaze Rapid beats, my heart pounding desperately in silence And fevered mind bending the twisted passing of the days Imprisoned in my own mind, in this dying body weak Life draining from my limbs and hazy eyes Writhing in agony that seems to know no hasty exit From this sinking ship, that ruined, I despise Weakness coursing through every aching fibre of being The darkness comes to smother me at long-awaited last Sinking deeper, plummeting through this darkened, chilly water Frozen in writhing agony, frozen in searing glass A hand grasps softly at my side, guiding me to the light That filters through my molten bars, release me to the night! Pain eases, red fades swiftly to a soothing gentle pink You are the soothing river to my eyes, deprived of sight Deep through the agony and wasting consciousness I lie A smile, engraved in that face once visible to me Your firm touch guides me momentarily into the day And light embraces aching limbs and eyes that cannot see Burning through the broken pieces of my mind, a single thought The memories of you now long behind this sorry waste Retreating sheets of night that fast approach upon this morgue' Your touch seeps through to me, time bends not again in haste But, too soon, the fleeting day sets for the final time I remember what you said to me when we still had the days Of freedom from this draining night a thousand years ago But still that lingering cooling touch by my crippled side stays And in sweet sorrow languishes the words upon my mouth With bitter seconds I must fill this dying legacy And struggling, for seconds eyes open upon your face Your beauty courses through me as the last thing I must see You are the most beautiful thing these eyes have ever seen You are the most beautiful thing these eyes will ever see
