I Uphold the Burning FlagA Poem by The Hampstead Poet
A flash of scarlet, pool of blood
Surrounded now, too late And still I hold the burning flag Aloft, against fire and hate We sung songs of victory Of a free, new dawning day That day will never come, yet I Stand proud, will never sway The sound of cannons, drums A sensual world I leave behind But as long as I stand loyal I shall not meet death blind And uphold I the burning flag And in it, I condemn Yet freedom shall be sought long after They have forgotten them We toasted life, we cheered For we all knew our bitter fate We stared down the cannon chambers The path we chose, leads straight There is no "if" in death There is no "if" in life We chose to free our people Bit back against the knife And still I wave this burning flag A rebellion forgotten And with it, burn our hearts away I feel my own noose tauten And what will we die for A cause noble as that A shining future we've ensured The glory brought by no combat
