Dark

Dark

A Poem by jammer

It’s dark in the corner

No light, no love

Only time

And time isn’t my friend

Only your shallow footsteps

Echo in my mind

You… leaving, crossing the threshold

My eyes turn toward the sound

Not even a shadow to glimpse

No hope for tomorrow

Or the days that follow

I close my eyes, no need to look

I know what’s coming for me

I know what’s out in the darkness

Years pass

The darkness changes to water

It slowly enters the room

Cold, icy fringed fingers clutch me

Holding me, pulling me down

I fight for air, I fight for life

I haven’t the strength

I give in, the water envelopes me

I fight for breath

For life itself

The darkness wins

I am helpless

Someone help me

Please help me

Years pass

Behind my close lids

I see light

Feel it warming me

To the depths of my soul

I can feel you before you touch me

I can feel your soul

Breathing life back into my lifeless body

My eyes open

Your smile is the source of the light

Your heart is the source of the warmth

The warmth envelopes me

Loves me…completes me

I am whole once again

I really enjoyed this piece. It shows human struggle but with hope at the end. Using the water as a metaphor for depression, that almost debilitating state is brilliant. Very well done. I like it.
