Cheers and Tears

Cheers and Tears

A Poem by Jamil Isimbabi
"

the first time i spoke (actually tried to recite what my teacher made me cram) in front of an audience. I was about 6.

"

Blatant dismissal of silent jeers
As my mind swam in seas of tears
After so much paractice now i faced my fears
Face to Face, Mouth to Ears
Screams and cheers
Gentlemen and chairs
Then I heard my name
I could see my name
bouncing of the walls
In front of that mammoth audience
My somewhat diminutive presence
Finally something I was more afraid of than darkness
I SHOULD NOT HAVE COME
I SHOULD HAVE STAYED AT HOME
I SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN BED
Trembling I remember what my mother said
'look at them, don't let them look at you'
But even she stared
...
I closed my eyes, startled, I started to stutter
...

Stage fright why I am scared to get on stage and you described the journey of fear of being watched, judged and fear of your own ability not to deliver. You even offered a lot of wisdom "don't let people watch you, watch them" ( I know not at exactly-smile). Here's the hitch, as terrified as I be...somehow it still comes out better. Great write Ja!

This is very relatable poetry. Expressed very effective way. I likely like it..... much praised work.
