Beneath the MirrorA Poem by Jamie
Gazing into the metallic surface on her wall, she sees:
A young, thin girl with a bright smile, Blonde hair with multiple tones, wavy, but yearning to be straight, Blue eyes, developing a yellow tint in the sun, And a bumpy nose resembling a ski jump. Whether she likes it or not, the mirror portrays her as short, And her cheeks are always rosy. Few scars and freckles dot her face; Despite it all, she finds her image pretty which, Leaves her to think, “This can’t really be me.” Those who don’t know her give her labels and See her as the Barbie, loving bright colors and glitter, The nerd, one of the smartest people they know, And the cat lady, having her house condemned as an old lady for an excessive amount of cats. But what if they really knew? Beneath the mirror, she digs deep and finds: A girl still searching for herself and worrying whether or not her future will be bright, Self consciousness over an already low weight, Someone sick of fitting in with those she calls friends and lastly, Desires to be invisible to make the problems logded in her soul go away. But maybe she doesn’t want to be like that; maybe she wants people to know her for Liking softball and running, wishing she were great at both. The person that is friendly and kind to everyone, Living a care-free life with smiles, laughs, and no stress. Also, someone who dreams of making a permanent change of life and of heart. © 2010 JamieAuthor's Note
