No Matter the Cost

No Matter the Cost

A Poem by James Carraway

How are you doing
The question so constant
Attempting intimacy
Without consent
My only protection
From your inquisition
Is to say 'Fine.'
And never change position
If I kept honest
All would run
Because depression is uncomfortable
And you just want fun
I wear a mask of self-confidence
Act like I have a plan
But I'm still guessing
Pretending I can
Everyone wants to be something
But that's where I'm lost
I want to be nothing
No matter the cost.
