The Future Of Cannabis Seed Varieties

It is uncertain what the future holds for the global seed market. The value of landrace and heirloom varieties must be protected and recognized internationally, perhaps through a series of "appellation of origin" type certifications similar to those used by the wine, cheese, and cured meat industries (a scheme already being called for by Californian cannabis farmers).

An internationally recognized standard for seed breeding, as well as transparency in commercial indoor breeding projects, should be implemented so that consumers are better informed about the 707 seeds for sale. In addition, cannabis seed producers and farmers worldwide should agree to and implement a moratorium on the introduction of foreign genetics into traditional landrace and heirloom areas, at least until landrace and heirloom varieties can be properly identified and protected.

All of this, of course, will be extremely difficult to implement, at least until the integrity of the landrace zones is completely contaminated. Already, landrace populations in Morocco have been nearly wiped out, and there have been anecdotal reports that Jamaica, Panama, and many other Caribbean and South/Central American populations have also been completely contaminated.

It's also worth noting that the introduction of foreign genetics does not necessarily mean the end of a landrace. According to a 1998 definition, "an autochthonous landrace is a landrace that has been grown for a long time in the farming system in question."

As the environment changes on an annual basis, and the landrace becomes 'contaminated' with a few genotypes of other landrace(s) or cultivar(s), it will continuously adapt." As a result, a resilient landrace population should be able to absorb some foreign genetic material without losing its overall character. So the race to protect the remaining landrace populations isn't over; it's just a matter of making sure that not too much foreign material is introduced.

In Morocco, for example, the sheer volume of cheap, feminized, and often poorly-stabilized genetics introduced into the local gene pool (and the clear preference among farmers for HYVs, leading landraces to be outright rejected in their favor) means that the battle has already been lost " unless sensible and much-needed breeding programs that make use of local drought-resistant adaptations, perhaps with controlled introductions of stable foreign vagabonds, can be implemented.

It's also worth remembering that in many countries, such as Morocco (where cannabis is not indigenous but has been introduced in several waves over more than a thousand years), landraces never would have become established in the first place if foreign genetics had not been introduced. However, most introductions have been limited and of remarkably constant landrace/heirloom population numbers up until now.

Today, a free-for-all situation is emerging, and if it spreads to other previously untouched populations, we may find ourselves cut off from the rich pool of landrace varieties on which we rely to develop commercial varieties for places where cannabis does not naturally grow. It's never been easier to grow your own marijuana plant, and all you need to get started is a list of the Best Seed Banks in USA.

Weed seeds can be purchased online in a secure, simple, and cost-effective manner. Half the battle, however, is compiling a list of the best-reviewed cannabis seed banks and then deciding which one appears to be the best fit for your project.
