American Pride

American Pride

A Poem by Jake Schmitz

American Pride

Trayvon Garner

American Pride flashed behind

as he ran for simply walking

hood up or down, they give him a frown

and ride by surely gawking

he’s a pig’s dinner, a simple side dish

and in the end just a name

on a very long list of sins we commit

in a single day

in god we trust

but god cannot support us

when this is the game we play

the pawns are lives

checkmate, then you die

all for American Pride

An excellent write!
I'm not qualified to critique your work...
But I'll make a comment:
Your words are subdued, but with a powerful impact...

Well done

Hello, Trayvon! :)
In line 6, I'd replace "but" with "and".
I think it's a great poem. My favorite thing about it is how much you've packed into it.
