The air was a perfect nothing
Then something wild crept into my mood
When the breeze swept through the trees
Across the porch; against my skin
Silenced my mind;
And made my spirit laugh.
I followed you through the grass.
The wind picked up my dress-
Tossed it side-to-side.
I held up my arms, raised my chin
Inhaled deep through my nose
and I really laughed.
We spread out under the sky
In the open air, gazed up
And watched the world swirl by
On a patchwork quilt
Of rain clouds and starry night.
We saw the same faces,
Made up their stories
And we really laughed.
You propped up on an elbow
I bent at the knees
And we watched the heat
Flash by in streaks.
We laid still and waited
For the storm to show
And fell in love
With the swaying of the trees
And the way that we laughed.
