Somber

Somber

A Poem by Matt Stewart

From this window I watch the seasons change;

The clock winds down slowly, until I find I feel estranged.

Burdened by the past, I search for a better way

To put behind the ashes of yesterday.

I once thought I was invincible, but now the truth is all too clear;

There's hope behind the questions, the pain and the fear.

I can hear my somber thoughts within the sound of such a gentle rain,

Fighting back time so my feelings may drift away.

Torn apart by the image of what everyone thinks I should be,

I reach for the highest truth, so that I may finally see.

Sometimes I long to be distant as the wind,

Drifting from place to place with no sight of an end.

Trusting this old guitar to somehow ease the strain,

The melody touches my heart and soul, like the needle hits the vein.

I've seen faces come and go;

Some as cold as the winters freezing snow.

Yet out from the ashes my soul is risen again,

By the grace of my creator, protector, and dear friend.

Tomorrow may be uncertain as the tide,

Yet we can't help but always question why.

Like the seasons all tend to pass, wisdom comes in time

To show us who we really are in between the lines.

Within the quiet of this room I seem to find release;

The time has come to let go, and at last sense an inner peace.

The world outside is calling as a whisper in the wind;

The sun is shining down on me, representing a promise that never ends.

After all this time I see just how far I've come,

And now there's no need to dwell on all the things that I had left undone.

Everyone seeks to be understood;

To be heard and cared for as we all should.

I find release in the fact I'm not alone.

There always be someone there to help lead me home.
