VanityA Poem by Matt StewartShe stands alone in a crowded room, broken and prone to wander; The jesters pass her by and stare, unaware of the pain she's under. He promised her everything and walked away like so many before, And now she's left to herself to wonder what's fighting for. He said he loved her, but his words were empty as the void now in her heart. She's left to herself now to make a brand new start. She looks for a prince among the jesters that show off their tainted crowns; The fools who would laugh to themselves as the world would come crashing down. So she walks the streets in search for herself to find a prince in rags Who talks of things the way they are for the good and for the bad. She sits awhile and listens, entranced by his speaking in tongues Of things she had never known, and things left to be done. He told her of love and of valour, things she thought were ended, He talked of angels and of devils, hearts that were broken and mended. He talked of love and wisdom, and spared the politics, He talked of the humble and proud, the poor and the rich. As the sun was rising she felt her time with him was done; He begged her to stay, yet she decided to move on. She found her vain prince charming, and life of vanity, Money and all the things she wanted that wouldn't amount to anything. One day he left her and she lost it all, forced to fend for herself again. Just when she was searching for reason, she passed a familiar friend. "Where will you go now?" He said, "I tried to warn you long ago. I tried to give you something more than all the silver and gold. I tried to give you wisdom, lessons from my life; I loved you so much I tried to give you your wings for your flight. There was something special about you; I fell in love with you that day. I did my best to show it yet all you did was walk away. I've thought it through in my head time after time; I thought you would have seen me through, and read between the lines. Love is not as shallow as looks and possessions; What it all comes down to is leaving that lasting impression." © 2012 Matt Stewart |
