Max

Max

A Chapter by Jade Mayhew

The longer I was left waiting outside the door, the louder I knocked. "D****t, Kevin, let me in!" Finally, I heard the lock turn and the door opened a crack.
"What's the password?" I pushed the door open, dropped my purse on the couch and ran through my Kevin's house, jumping over two cats, a table and a backpack that I didn't recognize along the way. "Ouch! D****t, Beckie, I think you broke my nose!"
"You'll be fine!" I shouted back, running into the bathroom and shutting the door loudly. I breathed a sigh of relief as I sat down.
I heard a knock. "Did you really run through my house, almost break my nose with my own door and wake up all my neighbors so you could pee?"
I stood up, flushed the toilet and pulled up my pants before opening the door and washing my hands. "I had to go really badly, and you were closer than home."
Kevin shook his head. "I thought something was wrong. Like you were hurt or something."
Turning off the faucet, I put my hand on my hip and turned to the side. "And yet, it still took you five minutes to answer the door."
"It wasn't five minutes. Maybe two."
"It was five, Kevin. Trust me, I was the one standing outside the door with a full bladder." I walked out and threw myself over the arm of the couch in my usual fashion. My head landed on something that didn't feel like a couch cushion. "What the hell kind of pillow--." Hoisting myself up on my elbow, I turned my head. "You're not a pillow."
There was a guy that I didn't recognize sitting in the middle of the couch. "No, I'm a Max." He smiled, revealing a mouth full of perfectly straight white teeth, quite possibly the nicest smile I'd ever seen. Warm brown eyes met mine through a sheet of light brown hair. A little long, but not quite chin length. He was very attractive.
I smiled back and sat up, extending my hand in the process. "I'm a Rebecca. It's nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you too, Rebecca," Max replied, taking my hand. "Now, am I in your spot?"
"You are, actually." Kevin smacked the back of my head. "Ow! Well he is! I'm not gonna lie!"
Kevin shook his head. "You're so rude, sometimes. Max, don't worry about it. She's been coming here since we were like 3 years old. She thinks she owns the place."
Max smiled. "Compromise?" he asked me, holding up a pillow. He placed it on his lap and moved his arms up for me to lay back down.
I smiled back at him and rested my head back. "Kevin, what time is it?" I asked, yawning. I felt Kevin lift my legs up and place them back down across his lap as he sat on the reclining end of the couch.
    "It's nearly midnight," he replied.
I peeked my eyes open a little bit and looked at the clock that hung on the wall behind me. "Why are you two still wide awake? I'm ready to pass out." I yawned again for emphasis.
    "Video games, Beck."
Stupid boys, I thought. I handed my cell phone to Kevin. "You know the drill," I told him, turning onto my side. My mind slowed down immediately, knowing Kevin would call my father to let him know where I was. Knowing that when I woke up, I'd be tucked into his bed, and he and his friend would probably be asleep on the couch. My thoughts got fuzzy and I fell asleep.
I didn't wake up as planned. I woke up in the middle of the night, still on the couch. I was covered with a blanket, head on the same pillow, my legs back on the couch, leading me to think Kevin had probably given his friend his bed and slept in his guest room. But when I reached above my head to stretch and reposition myself, I felt my hand hit something that shouldn't have been there. An arm. I sat up quickly, before I realized it was Max.There was a piece of paper next to my head.
I'm asleep in the guest room. He didn't want to wake you up by moving. Since I know you'll wake up (you never were able to sleep a full night on my couch), feel free to steal my bed. Goodnight, Beckie. --Kevin
"Awww," I muttered, looking back up at Max. I stood up quietly and laid him down across the couch. Tossing the blanket I'd been using across him, I started to walk to Kevin's room. Right before I opened his door, I paused and tiptoed back to the living room. Suddenly I didn't want to be alone. I grabbed a t-shirt and a pair of boxers from Kevin's bedroom, changed out my jeans and t-shirt and laid next to Max. I stared at him for a few minutes before rolling over to go back to sleep.
His arm slipped around my waist almost instantly, but I assumed it was something he did instinctively in his sleep. I didn't bother moving it and cuddled a little bit closer.
    "Goodnight, Max," I said absentmindedly.
    "Goodnight, Rebecca," he whispered back.
