Kevin

Kevin

A Chapter by Jade Mayhew

There were tears on my cheeks as I finished recounting the story. Kevin touched my hand, and almost immediately, I felt better. "Sounds like you had a rough time at Shawn's."
"I don't know which was harder: breaking up with Jordan or, well, basically breaking up with Shawn." I shook my head, rubbing my hair against the dirty rock. "It was not a good day. Sorry I never called you that night, but I spent a whole lot of time curled up with my journal, crying my eyes out. You should have seen my dad; he was a mess. He had no idea what to do. I'm actually surprised he didn't call you."
Kevin grinned. "I would have been there in a heartbeat."
I laughed. "I know; I just wanted to be alone."
"Okay, so it's the summer between your sophomore and junior year, you're fresh out of a relationship and just ended a long friendship, so where do we go next in the story?" Kevin asked, taking my mind back to a happier day.
"We go to the day I met Max," I replied.
"Ahh, yes, the night you broke my nose." I saw Kevin tense up out of the corner of my eye, preparing to be hit.
I smacked him. "I didn't break it then, but I'll break it now to put some validity in your accusation."
Kevin rubbed his head. "Hey, small words, I just got half my brains knocked out of my head. Okay, so the night you met Max. I was there, but refresh my memory."
    "Well, I had to pee..."
