She looks at her friends, smiling, chatting
And closes her eyes, slipping into a reverie.
She imagines that her high school is a jungle
And a scan shows everyone around,
But she no longer sees humans, but animals.
The most frequently viewed is the snake:
The conniving, sneaky, stealthy, untrustworthy animals.
She sees lions disguising the jocks, brave and powerful, the kings of the jungle and kings of the school.
She seems cowardly animals, the nerds, all huddled.
Finally, she sees doves; peaceful animals, beautiful, a sign of hope, her friends.
The bell rings, breaking her daydream.
She watches almost catatonic as she sees nerds reforming from the lions...
The jocks from the cowardly creatures.
And she tries not to watch with horror as the scales disappear,
The beady eyes grow bigger,
The split tongue returns to normal,
The venomous fangs are replaced by human pearly whites
And she pretends not to notice that from a snake,
Her best friend now stands before her.
I like that you juxtaposed the images of the animals at the end, it made the poem. Word choice is good. I like the end of the poem much better than the begining. Your description of the animal returning to their human forms is quite poetic. Good job.
