I Can Say

I Can Say

A Poem by Jade Mayhew

I can't say he's my brother;
Our blood is not the same.
I can't say he's my "party friend;"
Our ways were more than tame.

I can't say he's my savior;
There was nothing he could do.
I can't say he's a braniac;
He never had a clue.

He never knew I loved him;
He never knew I cared.
He never knew that when he turned,
I'd always be right there.

I can say he's my best friend
Who knows me outside in,
The one who knew the words to say,
There when I'd lose or win.

I can say he's the coolest,
Strong through all that we went through,
And although he's far from stupid,
He'll still never have a clue.

He'll never know how much he hurt me,
How much I still wish he were here.
How I still feel like crying,
Even though it's been four years.

How even after hating him,
And after leaving me alone,
And even after all the pain,
Our friendship's still set in stone.

I can't say he'll be the last I see;
It seemed our last meeting was our end.
But there is a word for guys like him.
I can say he's my friend.
