Puppy Love

Puppy Love

A Poem by Jade Mayhew
"

I wrote it for Brit Lit. We had to write a ballad. I got a 100 on it, so I guess it's okay-ish. Anyway, posting it here. Let me know what you think! :]

"

As kids, she'd chase him round and round

Until the sky got dark.

"Such puppy love, it's just so cute,"
Their moms spoke in the park.

Then as those two kids grew older,

The chase grew more intense.

She knew he wanted her as much.

So why he ran made no sense.

"It's just one-sided puppy love,

I see you as my friend.

I love you true, but in the way

I don't want this to end."

"End what?" she cried, at twelve years old.

"This will come back to haunt you!"
She dropped in tears onto the ground

And he held her, so true.

When high school came, the girl moved on.

The boy did too, in time.

But as they grew, he watched her as

Her beauty turned sublime.

He rang her bell one winter night

And waited in the cold.

The door unlocked; he stepped inside

And performed a move so bold.

He walked up to her and kissed her.

"I've loved you all my life.

One day, I swear, you take my word,

One day you'll be my wife."

She shook her head so miserably

That tears fell from her eyes.

She spoke words that were wholly false,

Words that she'd memorized.

"It's just one-sided puppy love,

I see you as my friend.

I love you true, but in the way

I don't want us to end.

One day you'll find your perfect girl,

And me, I'll find my prince.

You know that we won't happen."
Her words made the boy wince.

She spoke the words he'd said to her,

But from the other end,

It sounded like an enemy,

Not like words from a friend.

That night, they talked for hours.

He left her house in tears.

They went to different colleges.

The two lost touch for years.

She found her prince in college.

She thought he was so right.

Her first love got his invitation

The day he recalled that night.

They went to each other's weddings.

They watched the other cry.

When she died just months before him,

He tearfully said goodbye.

A letter was addressed to him,

Found beneath her bed.

With tear-filled eyes, he took a breath

And died with each word he read:

"My husband, he does love me.

Dear friend, I love him back.

But I never once stopped loving you,

Despite your harsh attack.

It was one-sided puppy love

At one time or another.

And yes, though people marked my heart

It was stolen by no other.

I'm dying, friend, I think you know.

But never, repeat, never

Doubt that I ever loved you true.

You'll be my love, forever."

"She can't be gone, she loved me still!
As well, she never knew

That although I said cruel things to her,

All the time, I loved her too."

They'd both found love, but both held back,

One secret, unconfided.

The puppy love had never been

At any point, one-sided.

Dear Jade,

thank you for posting this beautiful poem. What a moving and dramatic story!

My favorite lines were: "And yes, though people marked my heart / It was stolen by no other." as well as the last stanza.

Keep up the good work!

You guess this is okay-ish? I applaud your modesty!
Unbelievably moving, I could feel his pain near the end...
And a well-written ballad!

why do people hurt each other so by not being honest, not being truthful?
"One secret, unconfided.
The puppy love had never been
At any point, one-sided."
to say things for the sake of saying it...is it ever worth it?

Beautiful, and so sad, for me it's like watching a sad movie, so visual and full of emotions, to the end, nothing
left out. The poem reminded me of puppy love in my life. Thank you for sharing, God Bless you.

I liked it. It was sad and moving and made my eyes fog over.

I try to lend helpful critiques, but right now... I'm not sure what to add.

I am so tearfully affected that I am lost for words. How I hate that we sometimes do just the thing you wrote. Deny a love so true or be so foolish as to not recognize it as love until it is too late. This poem tears me up. Well written.

That is beautiful. There is nothing more I can say than that. You took my breath away with that.
