ShelterA Poem by Jade Mayhew
I can feel it coming now
That heavy winter’s snow That drives me deep inside myself To hide When the summer’s light and warmth Goes south to spread its love I can’t help but lie awake at night And cry And the world just seems too daunting And the memories all seem haunting And I can’t find which way’s up and which way’s down And my heart can’t sense the trouble Seeing danger working double All I need’s a one way ticket to a new, exciting town So wrap yourself around me Let the night fall on our souls And let the pain we suffer lose its sense of self-control And in this wild ride called life When the world can do us harm I know I’ll find my shelter in the safety of your arms Your eyes are constellations Each guides a different path I can’t decide which way I’m meant To take The brighter one seems frightening The darker one walks smooth And the longer that I pause, I fear I’ll break And the moonlight helps me see The very deepest parts of me Parts that angle toward the path that causes fear But that road that shines seductive Hides the fact that it’s destructive And it’s hard to choose the way when no way seems to be sincere So wrap yourself around me Let the night fall on our souls And let the pain we suffer lose its sense of self-control And in this wild ride called life When the world can do us harm I know I’ll find my shelter in the safety of your arms My nights seem far less scary When your light ignites my way And my days no longer give me cause for pain Your spirit made my heart its home And your laughter stole my breath And your love, it courses through my every vein I’ll wrap myself around you As the night falls on our souls And take away the pain that tries to break your self-control Because in this wild ride called life When the world can do you harm I hope you’ll find your shelter in the safety of my arms © 2018 Jade Mayhew |
