Blue

Blue

A Poem by Jade Mayhew

They say blue is the color of sadness
         ...Oh, she's blue...
That if your future is blue
         Expect pain
                       heartbreak
                       depression
                       loneliness

My future was always blue
         But I stayed positive
     Despite the pain, the heartbreak
         The depression, the loneliness
It was a beautiful blue
Like the vivid lovely blue of a clear sky
Touched by the ethereal rays of the summer sun
     Like a calm ocean
         Once the storm has passed
 And the clouds have parted

I learned to love my blue future
         Because it was always inevitable
Because it would come whether or not I was ready
Because it was easier to embrace it than to fear it

I looked for the blue everywhere
I looked for what would ruin my happiness
    As my world c o l l a p s e d around me

My life became blue
     It became pain, heartbreak
     It became depression, loneliness
         It became empty
         I became hollow

And then
         He looked at me

My heart raced, and my mind fogged up
But I could see, oh, I could see

His eyes
         They were blue
     Blue
         Like a clear sky
     Blue
         Like a calm ocean

And I suddenly knew
     My future wasn't meant for
         Pain
         Heartbreak
         Depression
         Loneliness
     His eyes were my future
And they were the most beautiful blue yet
