Mirrors

Mirrors

A Story by Jac Rogge
"

Very dark, very intense.

"
She took the present in her hands from which her uncle had given her. A mirror, green outline, designed like an old fashioned window, with four sections. She looked up at the mirror to see the water pouring from her brown-green eyes. She released her hands, shattering the mirror. Mirror splices thrown all onto the ceramic tile beneath, green frame intact. She looked down to see the damage she had caused. Walked over the mirror pieces, some entering her foot, but she ignored the pain, as she had more pain in her heart. In the corner of her room always laid a bat up against the wall. In case an intruder caused it to be used. Grabbing the bat as a batter would ready to hit a home run. Looked up with her depressed face and dragged her legs toward the bathroom, leaving a trail of blood behind her, stepped in front of the huge mirror. Again looked up to see the person she hated. Swung back and hit the mirror causing pieces to fly. Hitting with more anger than the last, as hard as she could. Hoping one piece might shatter from the mirror and slice her throat, but none did, just cuts here and there. She turned to see her mother’s cabinet covered in you guessed it mirrors. Three mirrors, perfectly shaped to the rectangle next to it. Took one end of the bat in one hand and the other end in her other hand. Lifted over her head and threw forward at full force towards the mirrors. Only a couple pieces shattering off the mirror. Mostly the mirror just looked as if covered in cobwebs. Hearing a shuffling coming from the hall, she saw her mom out of the corner of her eye. Her face painted with complete horror. So the girl stood there, quiet, staring at the job she had intended to do. She thought she heard her mom saying “What have you done?” but she ignored it. She turned to look at her mom blankly. She pushed passed her mom, still look of horror in her eyes. She went to her room, closed to door, walked over the glass once more to enter her bed. She lay there, feeling as if a task had been completed. Closed her eyes and let the world around her shatter as the mirrors had.

I wrote this when I was in Tech Ed and this kid was just ripping me apart. I'm pretty strong, but theres only so many times were you can take hearing you have a dike hair cut. So I started to cry a little right there is class and this poured out. Its dark but I think its my best work.

A sad story of a seemingly desolate and depressed young woman taking her rage against her image and in turn the perception of her she is convinced the world has she is concerned. I hope the shattering of the world was only a metaphorical exercise as she entered into the dark realm of sleep rather that the protagonist surrendering to madness or worse death by her own hand. Well done.
