If I say you are beautiful

If I say you are beautiful

A Poem by Jack...

If I say you are beautiful

If I say you are beautiful…

Do flowers bloom within your floating eyes

surrounding you with color, with thoughts

Looking past the mirror to that place you have been,

that you long to be again

Do you bite your lip,

looking within, seeking past the darkness,

subconsciously smoothing the ruffles of your dress,

shuffling your feet a bit

Do memories flood your mind

of days before lipstick and eye shadow,

when cute was as common as wrinkled nose smiles,

and playing inside or out were your choices

Do you roll your eyes and sigh,

describing a portrait that only you can see,

a mirage of impressions you have collected,

stored away in that file you reach for regularly

Do you brand me blind or crazy at least,

point to that one tiny blemish you know,

turn and walk away frowning as you go,

allowing a tiny tear drop to form

Or do you see your reflection in my eyes

the woman that you are to me,

hear the affection in my voice, the truth

and wrinkle your nose once more and say, “I love you”

As always Jack, you have spoken to me on the deepest level with your words and images and feelings. It's easy, even natural, to find elements of myself in everything you write. The juxtaposition of youthful innocence and grown-up insecurities (another hallmark of your writing) are impossible to ignore. There is no conscience or insecurity holding us back when we're kids...we just say what's on our minds, and wear our hearts on our sleeve, though we have no idea at that age that we're doing something so profound because we don't know any better. It's only when we evolve into hardened adults that we realize how honest we were as kids - even if we didn't always say the right thing - and lament the kind of freedom that our youth provided. Just telling someone how much we love them is a frightful chore...whether it be romance or family or friends, it feels like the hardest thing to do at times when it should be the most natural. A profound and painfully beautiful work my friend.
