That Barren Branch

That Barren Branch

A Poem by Jack...

That Barren Branch

That barren branch

high above this desolate space

Crooked shade designs on a dying earth

Bent and twisted of past sunlight reach

Naked to the green-less world

Rough hewed collections

Of ant trail pathways

And rot of all that was good

Once filled with life, happy on the breeze

Summer fashions of leaf pattern wishes

Colors of blissful post card greetings

Bearing fruit of friendlier times

Now rests in solitude’s wicked grip

Knotted and splintered bark winding

to a tapered end of winter’s calling

Cold fingers on gray-cast skylines

Dying of desperate missings

Fading into a bleak sunset

Disappearing somewhere beyond the dark

That barren branch…is me

There are only so many ways of telling someone in words how much they relate to what they are saying. I can only say at this point that it's in my library. The way you analogize trees reminds me a lot of the brook outside my window...I don't know how many lines have come to my mind while staring out at that brook, but there have been a lot. Nature seems to be a prime source of inspiration for both of us, it's just too bad the inspiration isn't more positive more often. Alas, it is the nature of the poetic beast. Well done Jack, and very relateable.

Thanks so much my friend. Yep, relateable.
There is so much pain and sadness here Jack - I hope this is only a muse

I'm so sorry to hear that Jack. I'm wishing for happy days ahead for you my friend :) Julie
A painted picture of a state of desolation. Yet, even the barren branches could be a momentary resting place for tired birds. The cycle of life allow us to shed our "leaves" to make way for the new ones.

Thank you so very much Gabrielle for your kind words.
But that branch will grow leaves and new shoot tips in the spring, bear fruit in summer... And then, have his heart broken and leaves taken by a heart's winter all over again... and then,again...
All things in life seem to come in a cycle, with a bit of growth and change between each incarnation. This is a desolate piece indeed, highly emotive sadness you paint in this barren branch tip... Very nice work, Jack!

Such sadness Jack yet as usual so beautifully written and expressed. Don't forget that even when we are in the grips of darkness. Still there is light to be found.

Welcome Jack
A superb metaphor for those times we feel abandoned and desolate. Just remember, Jack - Spring always returns...

Thanks so much Rita.
Quite somber indeed as love has now faded like the summer and Autumn, leaving the tree barren and destitute in winter's lonely, cold grip !

A moody rapture dealing in the shortcomings and undoing of love, penned with poetic aplomb!

Thanks Tom. Your kindness is appreciated
There are times we feel empty, as simple as that. Sadness is part of life, but still there is hope...

Nice analogy.
