At Twilight

The sun was setting as the fireflies slept snug in their beds; alarms clocks began to ring as Freddy opened his eyes.

“It can’t be twilight already, I hate twilight?” He groaned.

“Get up sleepyhead we’ve got our preflight meeting to attend,” said Frieda, who slept in the bed next to his. Sluggishly he stretched his wings. He wished he could just call in sick.

“Out of that bed mister, you’ve got some flying to do,” barked Old Sarge who had just entered the room.

In the meeting room Old Sarge spoke; “Listen up, Troop A will take Sector 27, Troop B, you hit 32 and Troop C, sector 18. Now a word of warning; the Jones twins in 27 like pulling the bulbs off of fireflies, so be careful A. The Coopers are having a pool party in 32, so B, use caution and C, Highway 181 is in your sector, look both ways before crossing. Now go out there and fly.”

“I really don’t like the Jones twins,” said Frieda.

“Don’t worry, I will take care of you,” comforted Freddy.

They were having a great time flickering about when out of nowhere, a hand reached up and grabbed Frieda.

“Got one,” snapped Buster Jones.

“Good, I see another,” said his twin brother Billford.

“Help me Freddy!” She cried from within the clenched fist.

“I will save you, when you see his hand open, fly out!” he shouted.

Freddy flew back and forth in front of Buster’s face.

“No, let me get him,” commanded Buster as he swung at Freddy with his other hand, slightly opening the one that held Frieda. She flew out as soon as she saw the opening. “Come on Freddy, I’m free,” she cried.

“Ok, just one minute,” said Freddy as he flew circles around Buster’s head causing him to spin in place while trying to catch him. He quickly became dizzy and fell into his brother knocking both of them to the ground.

Freddy laughed as he rejoined Frieda.

“Thanks for saving me, you’re my hero,” she cooed as she kissed him on the cheek

“I just love twilight,” he said as his little light shone brighter than ever before.
