An unfortunate EventA Stage Play by JaredI wrote this play for my class as school. I based it on the killing of Lawrence King; The fifteen year old boy who got shot for being gay by a fourteen year old boy. This years Day of Silence was in memory of him.
Scene 1 (Lights dim on stage, Audience sees a line of lockers on stage; a bell rings and the stage fills with light and with kids who are the age of middle school students. A young boy, the age of 15, walks onto the stage. His name is ZANE, you can tell the boy has lipstick on and he has woman rings on. Zane walks to his locker and opens it. A boy walks by Zane, whose name is GREG.) GREG F****t! (Zane looks up at the boy passing and frowns at the comment. He shuts his locker and walks off stage.) (Zane walks back on stage and the set has changed, it’s now a class room with a chalk board and about six desks. Zane sits in one at the front of the room closest to the chalk board. A few other kids walk out onto the stage and sit in some seats. A boy in the back of the room wads up a piece of paper and throws it at the back of Zane’s head. Zane looks back with a disgruntled expression. The lights on stage dim into darkness.) Scene 2 (The lights brighten and Zane walks on stage. The setup is of a room with a couch and a recliner. Zane is now home. Zane throws his bag down on the floor beside the couch.) ZANE Mom! I’m home! (HANNAH, in a red shirt and blue jeans, walks onto the stage, she walks up to Zane and bends over to hug him.) HANNAH Hi, honey! How was your day? (Zane looks down.) ZANE Fine. (Hannah lifted his head up to look her in the eyes.) HANNAH What happened sweet heart? ZANE Nothing, that boy just called me names and threw stuff at me again. (Hannah rises with anger in her voice.) HANNAH That’s it! I’m putting a stop to it! Right now! (Hannah exits the stage leaving Zane alone.) ZANE Mom! Don’t! It’s fine! (Zane runs off stage. The lights dim to darkness.) Scene 3 (The lights brighten again, and the school setting is back up. Zane and his friend Tommy are sitting in the hallway talking about a guy that just walked by. Tommy is gay too. Greg walks by and “accidentally” drops a book that flies over and hits Zane in the head. Tommy takes Zane to the nurse. The lights dim.) (The lights brighten showing the nurses office. Tommy and Zane sit in the office as the nurse, MRS. JEAN, looks at Zane’s head. She gets a flash light and shines the light into his eyes. She examines the eyes reaction.) MRS. JEAN It seems you have a slight concussion! I’ll call your mom to come and get you! (Zane looks at Tommy and back at the nurse.) ZANE No! that’s fine, I’ll be fine. I think I can handle a few more hours here. MRS. JEAN Are you sure? You can’t pass out! ZANE I know! I’ll be fine. (They all exit the stage. The lights dim to darkness.) Scene 4 (Zane and Tommy walk onto the stage again. The setting is Zane’s living room. Zane and Tommy set there book bags down on the floor and walk back off stage. They enter the kitchen when they come back on stage and Zane’s mom is standing at the stove.) ZANE Hi mom! Cane Tommy stay for dinner? HANNAH Of course he can! TOMMY Thanks Mrs. Jones HANNAH Not a problem Tommy. (Zane and Tommy leave the stage. Hannah follows back into the living room. Zane and Tommy do not know that Hannah is behind them.) TOMMY So are you going to tell you mom what happened today? ZANE No, she’s worried about me enough. TOMMY You should still tell her. She may be able to put a stop to it. ZANE She’s tried, many times. He will not stop. (Hannah hears all. She stands in the door way to the living room.) HANNAH What happened today Zane? (Zane and Tommy look up at Hannah with surprise.) ZANE Nothing, everything was fine. HANNAH Then what is Tommy talking about? ZANE Nothing, ju—nothing (Hannah walks over to the boys and sits down on the couch.) HANNAH Zane tell me what Greg done to you today. (Zane sighs and looks up at his mom.) ZANE He threw a book at me and caused me to have a semi-concussion it is no big deal! HANNAH This time I’m calling the school! Right now! (Hannah leaves the stage. Zane and Tommy sit on the floor and look at each other.) TOMMY I’m sorry ZANE It’s not your fault. I should have told her in the first place. (The lights dim and the stage empties.) Scene 5 (The lights brighten, on stage there is a line of computers and Zane and Tommy walk in. Greg walks in too. He looks mad. He walks up to Zane and Tommy. He hits Zane in the head.) ZANE Ow! (Greg sits in his seat at the end of the row.) (A bell rings to dismiss class. Zane, Tommy and Greg stand up.) GREG Zane! (Zane looks back at Greg and Greg pulls out a gun and before Zane can run the trigger is pulled. Greg shoots Zane in the head. Lights dim to darkness.) (A girl walks on stage, The NARRATOR, as the lights brighten just a little.) NARRATOR An ambulance came to the school to collect Zane, They kept him alive for three days on life support. When those three days were up. They realized that he would not recover from this tragic unfortunate event. Zane Jones died on (The lights dim to darkness.)
