Chapter 2: Midnight ReichA Chapter by izzy v
"So what's your name." Ewan asks as we strole through the dense jungle heading for home.
"..." "Why do you smell funny." He trips over my shoe. "..." "Hey. Quit it already." I say and turn to find her bewildered look. "Sorry. He was raised by Reavers." "Why don't you talk! Can't you talk!" He calls from somewhere behind us "Because I've let your mouths run; until, you decide we can officially meet." She says. "What's your name." I ask first. "Izalia." She looks over at Ewan. "What's the loud ones name?" "Ewan. I'm Edrie. You are new. "Yes. I'm new. How did you know?" "You don't have any stink worms to keep the shreikers away." "Hey. Do you want to come to our Reich later today. That way you can meet some normal people. You won't want to be seen with us." It gets uncomfortably quiet as we walk. After a few muinutes of walking we arrive at our home's entrance. Our security alarms go off in my earpiece when Izalia steps within our cavern perimeter. Ewan turns it off and Izalia follows me into the house. She makes herself at home on the couch as I change into my reich outfit. Ewan does the same and we head out with our sync boards in hand. We arrive at the northwest side of the island and meet up with all the other reichers. Ewan and I keep our distance. Eventually Hoary anounces the start of our ceremonial race to the adjacent island where we hold our reich each week. We line up on the edge of the cliff on which we've been waiting. As we stand over the edge, all the participants activate their crystal at once. Our boards react to the melodies and float in front of us. Hoary counts down and soon we are off. I hop on my board and plummet down towards the deep-blue blanket of water. I know my melody by heart and as the beat drops I shoot ocean bound. We all veer to the right. My melody sways as I skid and dodge the rocky finger shaped columns of lime rock jutting out of the crashing waves. I'm in second. Only Ewan speeds in front of me. If only we did not think the same way, but he shoots up the cliff the same as I do. Our melodies stop and we float suspended in a summersault. The melodies start with a kick and we rip through the forest. My sync energy meter reads 80 percent. So close. As soon as it hits 100 I activate my skill. I prodject a copy of myself 200 feet in front of me and one 2 feet behind. Ewan will only see the one behind and I will switch places with the one in front. Ewan looks back but I see a smile on his face. Oh no. His eyes close and the air around him seems to shimmer. At once everything within a 15 foot radius freezes and his speed increases exponentialy. He slingshots passed my right and I feel the intense cold. He leaves a frozen trail in his wake. Up ahead I see Ewan disappear over the edge of a cliff. I follow. We start the muinute long trip at 60 miles per hour, the island coming into view. © 2015 izzy vAuthor's Note
