Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A Chapter by Siobhan Crosier

I was walking in the forest at dusk. The tree leaves are a deep bright orange and a low brown. The sun is a brilliant golden shade of rose-tinted yellow. The once olive colored shrubs have faded to a beige color as the seasons change to autumn.

“Leilah?” that voice seemed familiar, but I couldn’t seem to put my finger on the name.

“Yes?” I asked, not knowing for whom or why I did.

“It’s me, Carly, and Trevor. Are you ok? You left the party fast, like you had seen a ghost or something.”

“Yeah, I’m fine. I just remembered that I forgot to do something…”

The sound of feet hitting the ground and a laugh from behind me came closer, it sounded like Carly’s voice, but I didn’t make assumptions.

“Well, ok.  If that’s it, then we are going back to the party?” said Trevor, the question was most likely directed towards Carly instead of me.

“Ouch!!...”  I assumed that Carly had punched him in the arm because that’s what she usually does when he’s being ignorant or inconsiderate. This was indeed Trevor and Carly.

“Are you sure that you’re okay?” asked Carly, apprehensively anxious in her tone.

The fact that they were both dating and complete opposites was totally rational because bickering was what opposites do right?  Well, I was hoping I was right because… if I was wrong… then I was about to be in the middle of it, which was exactly what I was hoping to avoid. I mean, who in their right mind would want to get in the midst of a lover’s spat?  Especially with a stake in the outcome?

“Yeah, I’m fine; just go back to the party already like Trevor said okay?”

“Well okay, if that’s what you want.”Carly said. She turned and stalked off like a puppy that had just been told to sit in a corner.

By the time they had left, I was already walking towards the school; everyone was at the summer bash celebrating the beginning of the summer holiday. While most people go home for the summer, I stay at the school.

As I walked to the campus where the Central Household is located, where most of the others live, I slowed. I live in the Mosaic House, which holds certain “special” people. They segregate us; you know, for the better good. The house I live in is for … certain people or… just me and the people who are what you would call different? But, who knows, because the teachers won’t tell me about the history or meaning or use for the Mosaic House much as the other houses.

On the way to the campus I saw a boy sitting on the bench near the lake, which was supposed to be haunted by the phantoms of the nearby town. That was legend because there was a killing in 1924 here, but no one knows about it except for “certain people” who used to go to this school. The name of this school is Tukiko es afar. Meaning Child of the Moon is far.

The only reason I came to this school is because both my parents died when I was 12 months old and I was living with my aunt and uncle till I was about 3. Until one night came and killed them when I was upstairs reading a book in the old chair in the corner of the room and then I heard a scream of pain and I ran out into the hall and a man was there. He was an old man, and he had a silver gray beard that hung to the tip of his elbow with silver rimmed glasses on his old wrinkled face.

He told me to come with him. So I took his outstretched hand then the whole house vanished before my very eyes. When I had woken I was here and I found out that I have gotten … certain powers that most people don’t and get to go to school all year long with kids that are normal and kids that are like me.

Kids with… magic.

Ehh, okay write. How you bring magic in is a little bit cliché, but it's still a good, creative chapter. I'm interested in seeing where this one goes.
