This is superb. I especially like the 'footprints in the sand' part. I remember reading that poem and loving it. But when my life was at it's worse, I was questioning where my God was. And when I read His words, I hoped everything would get better. It didn't.
I was actually caught off guard when you said "God is real" after reading all of that. But as I read the stanza, I came to understand. I believe it true that God is something we create; that's why there are so many variations. I especially hate it when people blame their deeds on the Devil, when they're the ones who carried out the deeds.
Anyway, this is a wonderfully executed poem. I absolutely adore it.
I'm afraid I have to take issue with you here, Ivor. God is very real, as is Satan. They are not mere avatars, representing the human condition, our many qualities, our manifold failings. In fact, it is the latter who has persuaded you of the formers, illusory nature, more's the pity!
You make requent reference to Love and Good within your poem . If there is no God, WHO INVENTED THOSE? Every single one of us is imbued with a template, not of goodness, but of Godness, and it is the degree to which we hew to that guide that determines our character.
"but only you can tell
if you are making Heaven on earth,
or spreading fiendish Hell. "
Absolutely! God is irrelevant to ethics, irrelevant to how we live our lives, irrelevant to the effects we have on others. It's our responsibility, as you say, to choose the right paths.
Technically, I adore this Ivor...as I do all your work!
There is no argument between you and I...you know where I stand about God!
But I DO agree that we make our own Heaven & Hell, because God created us with free will. We ARE the masters of our fate, the captain of our ship, the conductor of this train. All he asked of us was to be kind to those less fortunate, feed the poor, honor the ten commandments.
We get out of life what we contribute to it...call it karma or whatever, in essence, we will reap whatever we sow in this life. Sp be kind to little ole ladies in tennis shoes!!! lol
My sediments exactly- Rather then use God or the devil as excuses for all the good and evil in this world or as the bringers of rewards and punishment- let's look to ourselves -it's we who create our individual heavens and hells- It's we who do evil and good- it's we who forgive , love and hope. It's we who horde, kill and maim- Not God nor the Devil. They are only the dreams and harbingers of hope and despair- we are the catalysts.-- Your poem made me think of these things- Good job
