For You, In Your Infinite Wisdom

For You, In Your Infinite Wisdom

A Poem by itsnoteoin

Sweetheart, a quick poem
about you and I
to read sometime when
the rain beats incessantly
on your windowsill
and you can't remember
what it is to be happy -

a quick poem about
you, and I:
who wept angel tears when it all came down;
who ran reckless into the night, screaming our throats hoarse in amphetamine delight as the rain dripped down our sweat-drenched necks;
who gasped in unbridled ecstasy at the barren beauty of heroin and sex;
who smoked joints rolled by our own quivering fingertips, starved of nicotine and purpose, ashen and foul in the halogen glow of 3am;
who chained together hour after hour
who laid in the bottomless chasm of insomnia a wonderland of seconds and minutes, of birds and afterglows;
who figured it out, every last drop, only to lose it all again in a haze of barbiturates, acid and stone, crimsons and jades, indigos all together in a kaleidoscope blur of agony and traffic, tracing lines years deep into our retina, to return with every blink for as long as we woke up, to haunt us for longer than we thought we'd live:

didn't we live? didn't we burn? aren't we still burning?
You're gone. You won't come back. I'm
staggering
reeling
from the lack of you.

The sense of longing here is certainly palpable, and expressed elegantly, and the use of repetition is judicious and effective. The emotional tone of this piece, which I believe is so important, as poems revolving around love and its loss can spin out of control so easily, is just-so: the beginning of each of the first two stanzas is almost flippant in tone, which makes a nice counterpoint to what follows, that being heartfelt and deeply shaken, but not displayed in such a way that it overwhelms the writing. Frankly, given the fact that I could barely tie my shoes and pee standing upright in my teens, I'm a bit jealous of this.

you had me for a moment or two, my life has always been too real without drugs, I would never have survived heroin
